“Life is like a box of chocolates; you’ll never know what you will get” as Forrest said in the movie, sometimes we are uncertain of things that will happen in our life. But one thing is for sure, we all love chocolates whether it’s a white, dark or has milk in it, as creative as a chocolate bouquet or plain as a bar. Chocolates make life sweeter and lovelier.
As a kid when I step into the grocery, the first section that I look for is the chocolate section; this is my favourite part of the shop, this is my heaven. It’s as if I am in trans when I look at those chocolates piled up in the shelves. It will take a while before I sink back into the reality that I only needed to pick one because that is just I’m allowed. Now it’s a tough decision whether I’ll go for the white or dark or maybe with milk, ah things that make my mind swirl till now.
Now let’s start discussing the types of chocolates. Chocolate comes in a variety; each one is different from the other.
The first one is Milk Chocolate, as it implies this chocolate has milk as part of its component. It has a significant amount of milk in it combined with other ingredients. This chocolate has 20-25% cocoa solids, and the remaining percentage includes other ingredients including milk.
White chocolate, this one has a bit of controversy about it because a lot are saying that white chocolate is not actually chocolate. White chocolate is made of cocoa butter, sugar and milk. It doesn’t have cocoa solids on it, thus its white and it doesn’t have the “chocolatey bitter taste” on it. But then, of course, we still love our chocolate even in white.
Dark Chocolate, now this one is my favourite. This is made by adding fat and sugar to the cacao mixture. The more cocoa solids, the bitter the chocolate is. Semisweet chocolate is a variety of this; this one has low sugar content on it. On the other hand, bittersweet chocolate has more sugar percentage on it along with more cocoa butter and sometimes vanilla added on it.
Unsweetened chocolate is mainly raw or pure chocolate liquor. It is a mix of unadulterated cocoa solids and cocoa butter without any added sugar. This is used for baking and cooking because this is super bitter and not good eating on its own.
